Evacuation of residents of a residential healthcare facility is an expensive and traumatic event for staff, residents, and residents' families. Sometimes it is necessary for life safety and continued care. Therefore, facilities must have a thorough understanding of the risks and costs involved in either sheltering in place or evacuating is essential. Facility staff and leadership need to have developed clear plans, policies, and procedures to guide their decision-making and the evacuation itself. National standards, best practices, and case histories will guide the training.
