Disaster Planning: Infant and Young Child Feeding (SHPR0210)

THIS COURSE IS SPONSORED BY NEW HANOVER COUNTY PUBLIC HEALTH AND SEAHEC.

As recent events have shown, in a disaster or emergency, the needs of some of the most vulnerable citizens, our infants and children, are often overlooked in our responses. In this presentation you will discover how to help families prepare and overcome barriers to optimal feeding and how to combat common misconceptions that can lead to disruption of breastfeeding practices during these time of crisis.

OBJECTIVES

  • Identify the importance of breastfeeding in emergency situations
  • Discuss 3 barriers to breastfeeding during an emergency/disaster
  • Explore at least 3 ways responders and health care workers can support optimal feeding for families with infants and young children in an emergency
