Event Description

Active Assailant in Healthcare Organizations (HCC-0070)

Active assailant events in the US continue to increase, and healthcare organizations are not immune. Workplace violence has reached endemic proportions, with more than half a million healthcare providers assaulted each year in the United States. The number one motive for shootings in healthcare is a grudge against patient care staff, with suicide, euthanizing ill relatives, and spillover violence from the community trailing closely behind.
This presentation will cover the history of healthcare active assailant events, healthcare workplace violence statistics, perpetrator motives, methods to combat active assailants, and attack actions if an event occurs. In addition, this presentation will review several active shooter events and review lessons learned.
After the Active Assailant presentation, there will be a 1-hour workshop & panel discussion by the WNC Peer Support Group and Critical Incident Stress Management team.
