Science of Disaster (L-102)

This course in the National Emergency Management Basic Academy is designed to provide the participants with an overview of scientific principles and concepts that shape our increasingly dangerous world.

The contents of the course include the following:

  • Introduction to Science of Disaster provides a definition and benefits of science.
  • Earth Science and National Hazards describes how the Earth’s design sets the stage for the world’s natural hazards.
  • Science of Natural Hazards describes the scientific basis of common natural hazards.
  • Prediction gives us the capability to expect the unexpected.
  • Physical Science and Implications for Emergency Management identifies how emergency management can benefit from knowledge of the physical science of hazards.
  • Biological and Chemical Threats identifies the scientific basis of biological and chemical threats.
  • Explosive Threats identifies the scientific basis of those threats.
  • Radiological and Nuclear Threats identifies the scientific basis of those threats.

Offering Specific Information

This class is offered as part of the EMI Basic Academy series.  All students will be waitlisted.  Priority will be given to students who are registered for all courses in the series.  Other students will be approved if seats remain available.  NCEM is providing meal and lodging reimbursement for this offering within the NCOSBM Guidelines.  The guidelines and reimbursement forms are located as an attachment for this class.

North Carolina will be hosting the National Emergency Management Basic Academy sponsored by FEMA over the next year in Raleigh.  This class has been offered at EMI as an on-campus class but will be taught at the State EOC over 4 different weeks in 2018 and 2019.  The total curriculum will provide 160 hours of training for NCEM and IAEM Certification processes for either 1st time applicants or individuals looking to get training hours for re-certification.

About the Academy:

The goal of the Basic Academy is to support the early careers of emergency managers through a training experience combining knowledge of all fundamental systems, concepts, and practices of cutting-edge emergency management. The Academy provides shared classrooms of adult learners and skillful instructors resulting in a solid foundation upon which to build further studies and sound decisions.  The Academy is made up of 5 individual classes over a 4 week period that provide the basic knowledge and skillsets for an Emergency Management professional.

Target Audience:

The Basic Academy is geared towards newer Emergency Managers or individuals looking to make a career change into the Emergency Management Field.  Additionally, seasoned Emergency Managers will also benefit from the program as it will provide a solid foundation of all five mission areas in Emergency Management and connect local, state, federal, healthcare, higher education, and private sector emergency managers.
