Event Description

Capable Guardian: Instruct, Evacuate, Shelter, Defend (FOR-0009)

Capable guardians are those within an organization to which others would immediately look to for guidance during an active shooter event. This lecture teaches the concepts of the capable guardian and the steps of "Instruct, Evacuate, Shelter, Defend". This is an essential course for any workplace that has employees that are considered guardians of students, patients, staff, and visitors. This course teaches employees how to respond during an event to minimize loss of life and prevent harm to the public.

Active shooter events continue to plague the United States. Since 2009, the number of active shooter events in the United States has tripled and the lethality has increased 150 percent. The Department of Homeland Security has pushed the mantra, "Run, Hide, Fight". This is an excellent mantra for the general populations but falls short in providing response instruction for "capable guardians".
