Event Description

High-Threat Casualty Extraction (FOR-0011)

This course is designed to meet the needs of Rescue Task Force (RTF) personnel. Basic RTF patient extraction only exposes personnel to extraction on a horizontal plane. This course builds on those skills and focuses on victim extraction in the vertical environment. This hands-on course exposes students to alternative rope rescue techniques specifically designed for use in threat-based rescue and why traditional rope rescue equipment and techniques are not the most efficient choice. Students will learn the history of the techniques, how they correlate to NFPA 1006, Technical Rescuer Professional Qualifications JPR's. In addition, students will have a better understanding of NFPA 1983, the manufacturers standard for rope rescue equipment, and how this applies to equipment selection for threat-based victim extraction. Students will also be exposed to basic physics of rope rescue systems, and finally to more advanced techniques with micro kit operations. A variety of topics are covered to include:

  • Essential knots for hasty operations
  • Retrievable rope systems
  • Casualty evacuation systems
    • Straight lowers
    • Counter-balance systems
    • Ladder lowers (if available)
    • Stairwell lowers
  • Patient packaging
  • Choosing the right kit
