Event Description

Radiological Emergency Volunteer Corps Annual Training (SMRS0028)

Radiological Emergency Volunteer Corps (REVC) comprises medical and non-medical volunteers who are interested in assisting county-level Emergency Management agencies set-up and maintain population and environmental monitoring operations at established Reception Centers during radiological emergencies, or disasters.  REVC volunteers could be deployed to anywhere in the state for up to seven days.

REVC volunteers serve in the following ways when deployed during emergencies, or disasters:

  • Assist as a Radiation Safety Officer/SME (Team Leaders only)
  • Oversee or assist with the setup and administration of dosimetry (both permanent record and direct reading)
  • Oversee or assist with the setup and operation of the Ludlum Model 26 contamination survey meters
  • Oversee or assist with the setup and operation of the portal monitors (models 52 and 52-1-1)
  • Oversee or assist with contamination control based on the setup of the facility
  • Oversee or assist in resolving any issues that may arise from the evacuees or emergency workers entering the facility that have recently received radioactive tracer elements for medical diagnosis, therapy, or investigations.
  • Oversee or assist in resolving issues that would arise from evacuees or emergency workers not being able to be decontaminated at the facility.
  • Oversee ALARA practices and exposure monitoring for all emergency workers at the facilities (including REVC specialists).
  • Assist in the administration of potassium iodide (KI) to emergency workers including the side effects
  • Assist Public Health officials to observe for overexposure concerns
  • Assist in maintaining situation awareness
  • Assist with access control and site security
  • Assist with customer service and public information

Orientation training will be conducted within a eight hour time frame and will cover the following topic areas:

  • Overview of REVC’s Role in Reception Center Operations
  • ServNC General Awareness and Use
  • Health Physics Basics
  • General Radiological Emergency Plan Overview
  • Prepare For Reception Center Operations
  • Reception Center Operations
  • REVC Registration and Credentialing
